As the vibrant colors of summer begin to fade and the autumn breeze ushers in a new season, September carries a deeper significance in the United States—it is National Recovery Month. This annual observance serves as a beacon of hope and healing for those recovering from substance use disorders and mental health challenges. National Recovery Month emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and celebrating the journeys of individuals who have reclaimed their lives, while also raising awareness about the resources available to support those in need.

Established in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), National Recovery Month aims to promote awareness and understanding of substance use disorders and mental health issues, while also recognizing the achievements of individuals in recovery. This initiative highlights the fact that recovery is not only possible but also achievable with the right support, treatment, and determination.

Objectives of National Recovery Month

Promote Awareness and Education: National Recovery Month serves as an educational platform, fostering conversations about addiction, mental health, and the recovery process. By offering accurate information, the initiative encourages open dialogue and reduces the stigma that often prevents individuals from seeking help.

Celebrate Achievements: This month provides an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have overcome addiction and mental health challenges. Sharing these success stories empowers individuals in recovery and inspires others to embark on their own journeys toward healing.

Highlight Available Resources: National Recovery Month showcases the wide range of resources available to individuals seeking recovery. Whether counseling, support groups, medical treatment, or holistic therapies, the initiative connects people with the tools they need to navigate their unique paths to wellness.

Support Families and Communities: Addiction and mental health challenges affect not only individuals but also their families and communities. This observance promotes family involvement in the recovery process and encourages communities to rally behind those seeking help.

Therapy helps clients foster personal growth, build positive peer interactions, keep commitments, and follow a routine.  Adding therapy to medication treatment creates better outcomes.  Certified addiction professionals, TRUST (Treatment for Individuals Who Use Stimulants) trained professionals are available.

Case Management: Case managers assist individuals with serious mental illness in securing physical health care, stable housing, education or vocational training, and creating advanced directives.

Peer Recovery: Peer recovery coaches are individuals with lived experience who can offer support to individuals regardless of their chosen path to recovery.

QRT: Quick Response Team – response to non-fatal overdose in the community setting.  The QRT will review treatment options and assist in placement.  If the individual is not ready for treatment, education on safer use (harm reduction) is provided along with naloxone training to the individual and/or their family.
